MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX: NAVARRO FIFTH IN COMEBACK RACE, DI GIANNANTONIO CRASHES OUT IN LAP 2

The last overseas Grand Prix of the Moto2 World Championship at the Sepang International Circuit has just ended. The Beta Tools Speed Up team leaves Malaysia with Jorge Navarro’s fifth place, author of a stunning comeback and Fabio Di Giannantonio’s crash on the second lap.

At the start both Fabio and Jorge made no mistake, the rookie was seventh at the end of the first lap with four positions recovered, while the Spaniard maintained the fifteenth position ready to leave the big group already in the following lap. Unfortunately, an error at the second lap stopped Diggia’s race. After the crash at turn 4, Fabio immediately returned to the pit-box ready to back in the race after changing the right platform, but a couple of laps from the return to the track he was forced to retire due to problems with the bike caused by the crash.

Navarro struggled in the first laps but then found the rhythm and stareted the comeback. Ten are the positions he was able to recover from the start then crossing the finish line in fifth position.

JORGE NAVARRO #9 – 5th
“Complicated race because we started from an awkward position and in the first laps there was a bit of confusion in which I was not able to recover as I would have wished, losing a lot of time. Then I started shooting at a good pace and speed and from there I was able to start the comeback. The bike worked well today, the changes we made also so I’m happy, I’m just sorry that the title race ends here with this race. However, I am satisfied with the work we are doing and have done so far. Now let’s think about giving our best in the home race in Valencia”.
FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21 – DNF
“What a pity! I’m very sorry for the team because we were able to find a nice package for today’s race but I threw everything with a stupid mistake on the second lap. I could have been calmer and avoided the crash but it was like that and we must consider it as a learning and growth mistake. Head up and continue to work, ready to Valencia”.

MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX: FOURTH AND FIFTH ROW FOR JORGE AND DIGGIA

The Beta Tools Speed Up team riders will start from the fourth and fifth row of the grid respectively in the Malaysian Grand Prix scheduled for tomorrow at 6.20 CET. Fabio Di Giannantonio set the eleventh time in 2’05.956, while Navarro closed fifteenth qualifying in 2’06.126.

In the last morning practice session Fabio and Jorge lowered the time on Friday, both gaining direct access to Q2, Navarro with the eighth fastest time in 2’05.812 and Di Giannantonio with the fourteenth in 2’06.178 although the few laps in track due to the mid-session crash.

Back on track the conditions were uncertain and the riders hurried to find the fastest lap before the arrival of the rain. Diggia found his time at mid session, finishing eleventh, while Jorge after the crash at the start of the qualifying was forced to go back to the garage where the mechanics repaired the damage done in the crash in a short time and in the few minutes left the Spaniard marked the fifteenth time.

FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21 – 11th in 2’05.956
“Not the best today, I’m not really satisfied with this second day. I am still happy with the progress achieved because I am much better off with the bike and this is positive in a race view. Too bad for this morning’s crash that made us lose time on track because we could have used the last free practice session a little more. Qualifying not so well in the afternoon also because of the difficult track conditions, but we were able to find a good lap. Anyway, we know where we can improve to get ready for the race”.
JORGE NAVARRO #9 – 15th in 2’06.126
“Not the easiest day! The changes we made this morning did not help improve the feeling we had hoped for. Then for qualifying we did some more and as soon as I got back on track I gave my best on the first lap because I knew the conditions could have changed from one moment to the next. Unfortunately I made a mistake on turn 11 and crashed. Luckily I managed to get back on track even though the few minutes left and I managed to finish the session with the fifteenth time. I am optimistic for tomorrow, I believe that if we analyze the situation well and take the right steps we can make a good race”.

JORGE NAVARRO #9 – 5th in 2’06.503
“My day was intense but positive. The feeling on track have been good since the first laps, but we still have some work to do in view of the qualifying. We suffer a little on entering the turns, but we already have some ideas that we will try tomorrow morning in Fp3 hoping the track is as dry as today so we will be able to work well”.
FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21 – 7th in 2’06.581
“The first day in Sepang went well although my physical condition today is not optimal. I’m happy with how this first day went because in the end I was quite fast and in Fp2 we found the fastest lap. We are lacking a little rhythm, but we are working to get there, so good. We need to figure out which front tyre we will use in the race but we will use tomorrow’s morning session to find the answer if the conditions allow us! “
